Travel Tips

PASSPORTS

Please check your passport and make sure its expiration falls later than 6 months after entering South Africa AND that you have 2+ blank pages for the customs stamp.

If you are traveling to other countries for safari while on this trip, please check their entrance requirements.

TRAVEL MEDICATIONS & VACCINATIONS

There are no vaccines required to enter South Africa. However, your doctor may recommend some vaccines depending on where you plan to travel outside of Cape Town.

If you are traveling on safari, please speak with your tour operator regarding their suggested safety measures. Typically, you would need to take malaria pills before going on Safari (Kruger National Park and Greater Africa) even if this is just for precautionary measures.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL

South Africa has two main international airports: Johannesburg OR Tambo International and Cape Town International.

Both of these airports are easily accessible from most European hub. There are multiple flights a day between Johannesburg and Cape Town should you choose to fly via Johannesburg

If you would like a “meet and greet” service to assist you through immigration and escort you quickly from International Arrivals to Domestic Departures please contact Billy from Travel House Africa to assist.

POWER ADAPTERS

South Africa has few different types of plugs. We suggest buying a two-prong adapter and a three-prong adapter so that you’re covered across the board.

CELL RECEPTION

Roaming charges in South Africa can be on the expensive side. Local SIM cards are available to purchase at the airport from Vodacom and MTN.  Alternatively you can download the Airalo App to purchase an e-sim, which works really well.

WHATSAPP

Please download WhatsApp on your phone (iOS or Android). This is the primary communication tool in South Africa and will be how we broadcast information regarding wedding week activities closer towards the time.

CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS

Credit cards are typically accepted in restaurants and shops. Credit cards are often the most convenient way to pay, and safer than carrying large amounts of cash around. We recommend using a traveller’s credit card that doesn’t charge fees for international purchases.

While credit cards are widely accepted, you’ll still need a small amount of cash throughout your trip. We recommend withdrawing cash from the ATM when you arrive. You’ll get a better exchange rate from the machines than by using a currency exchange service at the airport.

If you plan to purchase a local sim card (and have a local number) download the app Snapscan. It’s an app that connects to your credit cards so you can tap to pay at different shops and vendors with a QR code. Tons of restaurants and shops use it for quick one-step credit card payments.

TIPPING

Please do what feels comfortable for you but the standard is between 10-15%.

If you’re hiring a car in South Africa, you’ll come into contact with the country’s car guards. These are people who will watch your car for you while you run your errands in exchange for a couple of Rands (reference note on carry small amounts of cash).

BABYSITTING & NANNIES

For those traveling with little ones we can recommend a great babysitting service called Winelands Nannies.

We are incredibly grateful for everyone making the effort to celebrate our celebration with us.
We know a lot of you are traveling from far and wide and your presence is what means the most to us and is the greatest gift we could receive.

However, should you wish to spoil us with a gift, we are putting together a gift registry which will be available soon.
